Table of Contents

Grade 2011 is a high-performance aluminum alloy that manufacturers prefer for its free-machining properties. When machined, chips of the material break off small and easily, allowing you to achieve tight tolerances. Thanks to its good mechanical properties, 2011 proved to be useful in aerospace and automotive applications.

What is 2011 Aluminum?

2011 is a free-machining aluminum alloy that is often used for precision parts. Its incredible machining properties ease the production of detailed and intricate parts, making it suitable for automatic lathes.

Grade 2011 Aluminum is also highly versatile. At JiejiaCNC, we use it to produce highly detailed precision parts for our customers.

Unlike other Aluminium alloys, 2011 does not offer superior corrosion resistance or weldability. As a measure to prevent additional damage, you should anodize the parts that need extra protection.

As with other Aluminium grades, you can apply precipitation hardening to 2011. This process enhances hardness but makes welding a challenge. This is because the more copper in an alloy, the more susceptible it is to corrosion cracking. Although 2011 is mostly used for machining, so you will hardly ever have to weld it.
For more information, check the guide on Corrosion Cracking.

Typical chemical composition of Aluminium 2011

The 2000 Aluminum series contains 0.7 to 6.8% copper along with trace amounts of silicon and other elements. These alloys retain their strength across a broad range of temperatures.

For more details, check the guide on Aluminum Copper Alloys.

2011 Aluminum vs Other Aluminum Grades

Here’s how other 2000 Aluminum alloys shape up against 2011.

2011 vs 6061:

6061 is a popular aluminum alloy that offers superior corrosion resistance but less machinability compared to 2011.

Because it has good corrosion resistance, engineers prefer 6061 for aircraft components, vehicle frames, and structural applications such as beams and columns. 6061 is also suitable for both manual and CNC machining, which is one of our core processes at JieJiaCNC.

2011 vs 7075:

7075 is among the strongest aluminum alloys, and it is commonly used to build high-stress aerospace applications.

7075 has exceptional strength and decent corrosion resistance. However, due to its high strength, 2011 is the alloy that is easier to machine. Also, because 7075 contains copper and zinc, you should not use it for welded applications to avoid microcracks.

2011 vs 2024:

2024 grade aluminum is widely used in aerospace applications. It is tougher than 2011, but inferior in terms of machinability. 2024 also exhibits good strength, but it is not as strong as 7075. Nor is it as suitable for high-stress applications.

To sum up:

  • Choose 2024 if you want to build machine parts fast without a priority on strength.
  • Choose 7075 if you’re building strong aircraft products.
  • And choose 6061 if you need flexible corrosion-resistant applications.

Each alloy is best suited for different applications.

Buying and Sourcing 2011 Aluminum

Despite 2011’s versatility and machinability, it may not always be the optimal choice for many applications. If you want to ensure a smooth job, these are quick guidelines to sourcing 2011 aluminum.

When to choose 2011:

  • You should use it in projects that require hardness and moderate corrosion.
  • You should use 2011 if you need fasteners or threaded parts.
  • If you want to build structural aircraft or mechanical parts with moderate strength

When to explore alternatives:

  • You should look for alternatives if the service environment is prone to corrosion. Without protective coating, 2011 may wear quickly.
  • If you need high-strength metals, 2011 might not be the best match for your job. 7075 offers increased strength, and it is better suited towards heavy-duty applications.

For best results, always specify the heat treatment condition, surface finish and machining properties when buying 2011.
