Table of Contents

2024 aluminum offers high strength with low weight. You’ll find it in aerospace, machinery, racing, and structural parts. It’s built for harsh and challenging settings. In this guide, you’ll find its key properties, uses, and machining behavior.

What Is 2024 Aluminum?

img 2 2024 aluminum defination

You’ll find 2024 aluminum under names like Al 2024 or simply Aluminum 2024. It’s a high-strength alloy from the 2xxx aluminum series. And this series consists of copper-based alloys. All the alloys in this series are known for good fatigue resistance under stress.

So, you can choose 2024 aluminum alloy when your workpiece needs to handle high loads. Because it won’t add too much weight to your design. However, unlike some general-purpose aluminum grades, 2024 doesn’t offer corrosion protection. You can get this alloy in many tempers. But T3 and T351 are the most common. These tempers strike a balance between hardness and workability. If you’re working on structures that must stay rigid and light, this alloy should be on your shortlist.

Chemical Composition of 2024 Aluminum

img 3 2024 aluminum chemical composition

Like most aluminum alloys, you’re not just working with one metal here. You get a mix of elements, and each one changes how the material behaves. The following are key elements included in 2024 aluminum:

  • Aluminum: You’ll get aluminum as the base. It keeps the material light. It’s also easy to form and shape.
  • Copper: You’ll see copper added in next. It’s what gives 2024 its strength and toughness. With copper, the alloy can take pressure and handle repeated stress. But copper also makes it more likely to corrode. So you’ll usually need a surface coating to protect it.
  • Magnesium: Magnesium adds more strength. It also helps improve fatigue resistance. That means parts last longer under regular use.
  • Manganese: Manganese plays a smaller role. It helps with structure and supports heat treatment stability.

You’ll also find small amounts of silicon, iron, zinc, and titanium in aluminum alloy. These elements help with casting and processing. They also improve final performance. However, they don’t make up a big part of the mix.

The table below shows in detail exactly how 2024 aluminum is made up:

Mechanical and Physical Properties

When you choose 2024 aluminum, you’re picking strength over flexibility and corrosion resistance. You’ll get higher strength than common grades like 6061. But you’ll give up some ease of forming and natural corrosion protection.

Here’s what you can expect in T3 temper:

  • Ultimate tensile strength: ~470 MPa
  • Yield strength: ~325 MPa
  • Elongation: 10 – 20%
  • Brinell hardness: ~120
  • Modulus of elasticity: ~73 GPa

2024 offers strength close to some light steels. Yet it weighs much less. For mobile applications, that trade-off is worth it. You get structural strength without the drag or fuel cost of heavier materials.

For physical properties, you’ll get:

  • Density: 2.78 g/cm³
  • Melting point: ~500°C
  • Thermal conductivity: 121 W/m·K
  • Electrical conductivity: 30% IACS

2024 responds to heat. That’s good when your part heats up during operation. But you’ll need to control your feed rates and cooling. Otherwise, your part may warp slightly.

How to Machine 2024 Aluminum

img 5 machining 2024 aluminum

Machining 2024 aluminum needs care. You need to know that 2024 aluminum is harder than many other aluminum grades. That means tool wear happens faster. So, for machining it, you’ll need slower speeds and a coolant to manage heat.

Besides, you need to secure your workpiece well. 2024 aluminum can be springy and move under cutting forces. Use proper clamping and support to prevent vibration and chatter.

Here are other key tips for machining 2024 aluminum:

  • Use carbide tools with polished flutes
  • Clear chips with high-pressure coolant
  • Watch for built-up edge (BUE)
  • Avoid plunge cuts; use ramping entry
  • Secure parts with non-deforming clamps

Surface Finishes Available for 2024 Aluminum

img 6 2024 aluminum surface finishes

2024 aluminum gives you excellent strength. But it doesn’t resist corrosion well on its own. That’s mostly because of the added copper. Copper makes the alloy stronger. But it also reacts more easily with air, moisture, and salt.

That’s why surface treatments are important when you use 2024. These treatments protect the material. They also help it last longer. Here are some of the most common options.

Hard Anodizing

It is one of the most effective ways to improve the corrosion resistance of 2024 aluminum.  It creates a thick, durable oxide layer on the surface. That layer is typically 30 to 50 microns deep. It helps resist both scratches and chemical damage.

Hard anodizing also increases surface hardness significantly. The surface can reach over 60 Rockwell C. This is useful for parts under friction or stress. Just remember, the coating changes the size slightly. So you should plan for that when designing the part.

Alcladding

Another effective option is using Alclad. That means bonding a thin layer of pure aluminum onto the surface of 2024 alloy. It’s done during the rolling phase.

That outer layer helps fight corrosion. Meanwhile, the core keeps its original strength. You don’t lose mechanical performance.

You’ll see Alclad a lot in aerospace applications. It adds protection without adding weight. That’s why it’s a go-to for critical structures.

Chromate Conversion Coating

If you need light surface protection, you can use Alodine or Iridite. This chemical treatment creates a thin “pass paint” over the aluminum. It’s not heavy. But it is thick enough to offer corrosion resistance.

It can also be used as a primer for paint or powder coating.

Besides, it is a good option as well if you want to keep electrical conductivity. You’ll often see it on enclosures, brackets, and electrical parts. It’s best for areas not exposed to harsh conditions.

Powder Coating and Painting

Powder coating is another popular option. It’s especially useful for large or oddly shaped parts. The coating starts as a dry powder. Then it’s baked at high heat to form a hard, even layer.

It sticks well and gives you a clean, sealed finish. You can choose any color or texture based on your project needs.

Painting works in a similar way. It gives you more color control and a thinner finish. But for heavy-duty parts, powder coating lasts longer. And it holds up better over time.

Teflon (PTFE) Coating

You can use PTFE coating when you need a non-stick surface. It helps with sliding contact. It’s also useful in chemical-heavy or wet environments.

Just note, it’s not very tough. PTFE doesn’t handle heavy impacts like anodizing or powder coatings. So use it where friction control matters more than surface strength.

Understanding 2024 Aluminum Tempers

2024 aluminum comes in more than one form. These different versions are called tempers. And they change how the metal behaves. The temper shows what kind of treatment the alloy has gone through. This could be heat-treating, cold working, or aging.

That process affects several things. It changes the metal’s strength. It also affects how easy it is to machine and how well it handles stress.

Here are the most common ones you’ll come across:

If you’re machining parts, T3 or T351 are safe bets. If you’re bending or shaping before machining, go with O or T4.

Common Applications of 2024 Aluminum

2024 aluminum is a solid pick when strength matters more than corrosion resistance. It’s best for parts that take on heavy stress. But it’s not ideal for long exposure to weather or moisture.

Aerospace

You’ve probably seen 2024 used in aerospace. It’s been around for years. Many older military and commercial aircraft relied on 2024. It was used in wing panels, fuselage sections, and support frames.

It’s not the newest option today. But it’s still trusted for its strength-to-weight ratio. With it, you get solid performance without adding unnecessary weight. That’s why it worked so well in aircraft builds.

 Automotive and Racing

In race cars and custom builds, weight and performance go together. 2024 is often used for brackets, suspension arms, and some transmission parts.

These components deal with a lot of force. That’s especially true during sharp turns or sudden stops. The alloy keeps parts stiff and responsive. Drivers count on that when every second matters.

Robotics and Machinery

You’ll also find 2024 in robotics. It’s often used in moving parts like arms and joints.

These parts need to stay light so the robot can move quickly. But they also need to stay strong through constant motion.

You’ll see the same in industrial setups. 2024 is a good fit for machines that need precision without extra weight.

Tools and Fixtures

In workshops and factories, you’ll see 2024 used in jigs, molds, and fixtures. These tools face constant pressure during setup and production.

If a fixture bends or warps, it can mess up the entire process. That’s why many machinists choose 2024. It holds its shape, even under stress.

When to Choose 2024 Over Other Aluminum Grades

Choosing the right alloy depends on what your part needs to do. 2024 aluminum isn’t the most general-purpose metal. However, it shines when you need to manage heavy loads and high stress.

Here’s a basic comparison to help decide if 2024 is the right choice:

img 11 2024 aliminum vs other alumium grades

Choose 2024 if:

  • Your part will be under repeated load or impact
  • Weight matters, and steel is too heavy
  • Surface finish isn’t exposed or will be coated
  • You don’t need to weld it

Avoid 2024 if:

  • Your part will live outdoors without coating
  • Welding is necessary
  • You need high corrosion resistance without extra steps
